Parents/Students,
We had a great week last week. The students were given many assessments and worked very hard. Awesome.
This week will begin the first true week of fifth grade. We will begin rotations on Monday, for both reading and math. Students will begin working from the reading book and math book. Also, library begins this week. P.E. is in full swing, including SPARK activities and jogging. Lessons in Speaking and Listening will begin this week as well.
Some homework will increase, but not too much. It is not our (the fifth grade team) goal to overwork the students at home. We prefer for them to master skills at school, and then maybe review at home. Remember, fifth graders are expected to read 20 minutes a night. If you choose to make that longer, that is up to you.
Also this week, there will be pictures taken on Wednesday, and I will be out on Friday for training.
Some standards/topics your child will be working on this week are:
Common Core Speaking and Listening: Engage in effective collaborative discussions on fifth grade topics. Follow agreed upon rules and carry out roles in discussions.
Math (Mrs. McElroy's Class): The students will draw grids to determine the number of factors in number. Identify numbers as prime or composite. Find the prime factorization of a number. And, write products using exponents.
Reading (Mrs. McElroy's Class): Students will identify types of sentences as imperative, interrogative, exclamatory or declarative.
Social Studies: American Government - Students will identify the three branches of government. Students will be able to describe three amendments in the Bill of Rights. And, they will describe the role of citizenship.
In Writing: Students are working on strong verb paragraphs. A set of verbs (these are called Dead Verbs) are being banished from their writing-mostly. We will continue to write short essays and journals each week as well as read and score sample essays.
Remember, I will post all the homework, for all fifth grade classes, on my website. I will also have students write in their planners each day what is expected of them.
Good luck everybody..
And we're off
