I'll see you all on Monday, have a great weekend.
|Mrs. McElroy's Class||
Just a quick update to let you know that I have updated the grades. Everything I have is on Jupiter Grades. If you are missing an assignment it went in as a zero. Of course, you can still get in that work next week. You have 7 days before I drop the grade to 70 percent. Take a peek and come in ready to find the missing work.
I'll see you all on Monday, have a great weekend.
Parents and Students,
I hope everyone had a great weekend and a lovely Thanksgiving.
The next three weeks will be busy. Whenever I get five day weeks, a few in a row, I'm motivated to include as much curriculum as I can within that time period. Needless to say, we will be working hard for a while.
Math - the students are finishing up their study of fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) this week and will test chapter 5 and lessons 6-8 and 6-10 on Friday.
Reading - we are reading at a rapid pace, and are testing weekly. This week is a fable called the "Ch'i-lin Purse". We read it on Friday and will work with greek and latin root words as well as comparing and contrasting this week.
Science - I'm switiching with Mr. Bague this week. Mr. Bague's class, will be working on Chapter 8, Metals and Salts. It will take one week to instruct, and another week to study for the test which is scheduled for December 6.
Students and Parents of Room 34,
Well the report cards are finished and will get to you on Friday, the 16th. Remember the grades are online, for you to check anytime. Meanwhile, the new trimester has begun. The first set of grades are on Jupiter Grades. Remember the new rules for this trimester - the students have one full week to turn in late work, before the grade drops to 70 percent. Also, I expect the students to write their full name and teacher on each piece of paper. If that does not happen, I am removing 5% from the grade. So, if you see 5% removed, that is why. This is not meant to dramatically lower grades. I teach almost 80 students on a daily basis and it is really important to make sure each paper is properly headed.
The next couple of weeks are interesting. This week coming week is a short one, four days. And the next week is a two day week. Monday the 19th is our field trip to the Science Center (we get to see the Space Shuttle), and the 20th is Grandparents day. No school on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of that week.
I have to tell you all that I am really proud of the students. This past week, especially, the students were very well focused, and they worked very hard. Nicely done.
Don't forget to feel free to email me, I'm better at the email than I am with the phone, and ask any questions you have.
Parents and students,
A new trimester has begun. November 2nd was the final day of the first trimester. My spare time this week will be spent writing report cards. Take a good look at Jupiter Grades and make sure you know what to expect. Feel free to email me with any questions and I will get back as soon as possible so that we may clarify the situation.
Please note that this information applies to my grade book only, I cannot speak for Mr. Bague, or Mrs. Vannix.
For Math - The math grades are done and they are final. As is typical for fifth graders, students who usually achieve high marks in math might very well be earning lower grades than they are used to. I find that while this is upsetting, at first, for students and parents, they do improve. The work level of fifth grade is much harder, and the skills being learned are new. Really tough stuff. But, they do get used to it, and they do get better.
Reading - Those grades are final. Just a few have some work to turn in from last week's story "Ten Mile Day". They may do so at the beginning of the week, and those will be included.
Science - Those grades are not final. Many, many students have not turned in their scrapbook pages. I also have plenty of papers without names. I give the students until Tuesday, to get those in to me, or find them in the "No Name" box in my room.
P.E. is graded on mainly participation. I have been keeping notes on each P.E. session and will use those. Next trimester, I will include a P.E. page in the grade book, so you can see how things are going.
Now, some thoughts for next trimester. This past trimester was plagued by students turning in work with no name or teacher's name. This next trimester I will make deduction for that. A small deduction, a point or two depending upon the weight of the assignment.
As for late work, I get a great deal of that as well. Most often, because students just leave my room, or stuff their work in their desk without hearing the directions "Turn in your work." So this next trimester, I will give the students one week to turn in late work without penalty, but they can only receive 70% after a week. They are in charge of knowing what the assignments are and getting them in.
Finally, remember, we start fresh for each report card. Every one has a clean slate as of Monday morning.
Have a great week,
