Parents,
Many things are happening this week. The curriculum is fully underway and the students are working very hard. They love the new computers and most have begun their blogs. It is difficult for the students to all be online in the class at one time. Many could not set up their blogs on Friday. They will have some independent computer time this week, but any time you can give them on their home computers will be helpful.
I have told the students that they may not search Youtube here in class. I cannot monitor all students at once. If they wish to download a video from Youtube, they must search at home, with your supervision, and obeying your rules.
Reading - Both grades will begin a new story in their reader this week. I will instruct the Reading Response Journals in class this week, and begin sending it home for homework next week. The only reading homework is to read nightly: 20 minutes for fourth, and 30 minutes for fifth.
Fourth Grade will begin Chapter 2 in their math books this week which involve adding and subtraction and estimating larger numbers.
Fourth graders will have a new spelling list this week: Mrs. McElroy's 4th Grade List #2. I am finding there is too much paperwork involved in printing all the work and turning it in. Let's save some paper and try something new. Each night your child will have some work to do on spelling city. If they do it, sign their planner. I will check the planner daily and assume that if it is signed, it has been done. If there is anyone who cannot even view a computer, let me know and I will give that child their weekly assignments.
Fifth grade will have a math test on Chapter 1 this Tuesday. They will also have a test in Science on that day, on Chapter 4. They all have study guides for the science test. We have been practicing for the test daily in class, using questions directly from the test. I have given them notes and quizzed them regularly on the vocabulary. That is a lot of support. They may not use their notes on the test.
Also, in science, the fifth grade students will begin an Earth project, to be completed in class, unless they get behind. This will be worth the same as a test. It will be introduced on Monday, and due on Friday.
Well that's it. I hope all is going well. Keep in contact if you have any questions. Let's have a great week.
