Differentiation
In this class your child will receive a great deal of differentiated instruction. Differentiation is one way in which teachers work to meet the individual needs of all the students. This work will be used to help your child think more deeply about curriculum – to see more than just the worksheet or the report, but to connect ideas across disciplines. There are an endless number of ways to approach the curriculum with differentiation, and since the goal is individualized instruction, often adjustments are made “on the spot” in the classroom. However, listed below are some goals I have for your child this year.
Scholarliness - Your child will begin learning what it means to be a scholar. We will study some very famous scholars (i.e. Thomas Jefferson, Marie Curie, etc.) and compare their specific scholarly traits to ourselves. I want them to see themselves as scholars and approach school with that belief. We will focus on a
Classroom Theme –Our theme this year is "Change", one of my favorites. We will study elements of Change throughout the year in all subject areas, including behavioral discussions. We begin with an in depth study of "Yerlte the Turtle" and continue with our literature series, social studies, science and even mathematics.
Objectives – Teachers write objectives daily. We write them on a large scale, objectives for the year, for example. We write them for each, individual lesson, as well as for center and independent activities. One of my goals for your child this year is to learn how write their own “differentiated” objective. They will learn how to consider a piece of material, how it should best be studied, what materials they need, and how the information should be displayed. They will learn to write their own “pathways” that lead the completion of the assignment, and they will review, analyze, and evaluate their own work. I want the students to know what it means to be metacognitive and understand themselves as learners.
