Well, we have finished the first full week of school. We had a great time. We practiced our jogging, and had two more SPARK (PE) lessons. We studies Yertle the Turtle and reviewed many of the icons of depth and complexity. We have been studying Order vs. Chaos in that book and others. We read a bit about Ruby Bridges and discussed positive and negative character traits. We have been identifying prepositions in class and finding prepositional phrases in sentences. We studied the first three lessons in the math book and began our first spelling list as well.
These students are full of creative and insightful ideas. They are very well focused during the day and work quietly. Very much appreciated. I'm having a great time, I hope they are as well.
This coming week there will be a math quiz on the first three lessons. The skills are: identifying prime and composite numbers, finding the prime factorization of a number, writing numbers with exponents, and using the Order of Operations to solve equations. The test will be on Wednesday the 29th.
A couple other tests coming up are the Western States Test, in which the students will need to name each state on the map and it's capitol. The abbreviations are extra credit. That test is on September 10th.
We have been studying matter in science and a test on Chapter 7 of the book will be on Friday, September 7th.
The reading series will begin this week in class. The Red Kayak is the first story in the book. Your student will begin using the practice book for Grammar and Comprehension. I have decided not to work with the spelling program this year and focus more directly on the standards. We will be studying Greek and Latin prefixes, roots, and suffixes. With an emphasis on vocabulary development.
The students will begin their rotations for reading and math on the September fourth, when we come back from Labor Day.
I'll update you again soon, have a great weekend everyone.
