It's field trip time! Monday morning is our first, to the Ronald Reagan Museum. The students have been prepped and have learned a lot. We studied the incident with Grenada, discussed communism, and the Berlin Wall. Sulema Garcia, our head custodian, came and talked to the class about living in Cuba. The kids loved it and she did a great job. We have spoken to the museum and they are open for the field trip despite the government shutdown. Some areas may be closed, but the reenactment of the incident of Grenada is still on- at this point. We have been told to proceed as planned. That means, students show up on time, Monday morning, dressed like they are going to a nice dinner. Those in the military may dress in military style. Sack lunch, no pictures, no money for spending. We will apparently be quiet busy all day. This is a new experience for me, I'm looking forward to it.
All of the fifth grade classes will be going to the Castaic Water Agency this week as well. That is a half day trip, so no need to pack a sack lunch. We will have lunch at school as usual. My class will go on Thursday.
Due to the field trips, there will be no reading or math rotations this week.
We have been working on Writers Workshop the two weeks before the break but ran out of time. We will finish those this week and change the due date to this Friday.
Accelerated Reader - The standard for 4th , 5th, and 6th, this year is to read 3 books (the first trimester) and take tests for 10 percent of their grade. Some students are more focused on this than others. It has been difficult in my room due to the lack of computers. However, students have been using my personal computer, as well as going to other classes to take tests. Many have already completed the three books necessary for this trimester. This week, I will review this with the students and find out exactly where they stand in regards to this standard. The report card time will be here sooner than we think. Talk to your child about what he or she has read, and how they are planning to get their books read. I can make adjustments for individuals depending upon their needs. (Some students are dying to read books that are not AR.) I will make it clear to the students that this needs to be done prior to the end of the reporting period (about the middle of November). If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Have a great week,
Mrs. McElroy
