I hope everyong had a great weekend. The students seemed to have fun at their Popcorn and Icecream Party on Wednesday.
For the coming week -
Reportcards will be sent home on Friday. Students are doing well, but there are always areas in which students can work better to achieve their full potential. I will be heading out after school that day for a Thanksgiving in San Diego. But I will check email. If you have questions, I'd be glad to get back to you.
The fifth graders will have a dress rehearsal on Monday morning at 8:30 for the k - 2 students. Then another dress rehearsal on Tuesday for the 3 - 6 students. Yea! I finally get to see the play. Then, on Friday, at 8:30, they perform for the parents. I hope you can all attend.
Also, for fifth graders, there will be a test for Chapter 5 of the Math book, on Thursday. The Wordly Wise test is on Friday.
Fourth graders will continue with the same spelling list and begin Chapter 7 in the math book. It is time to begin multiplying large numbers. Since there is a week long break in the middle of this chapter for the fourths, I will do as I did during the fall break. I will give a quiz on Lesson 1 - 6 on Firday, and then continue the chapter when we return and give a quiz for the remaining lessons the week we return. The two quizes will be combined to make one test score.
Remember that Thursday is a minimum day, and Grandparents Day. The Grandparents will have the opportunity to visit during two sessions. The first is from 11:15 - 11:45 and the second is from 11:50 to 12:20.
A big reminder for both grade levels, there is a Reading Journal due this week.
The new grading period, for the second trimester, started last week. I have informed the students that the grades from the first trimester, play no part for the grading of the second trimester. The slate has been wiped clean and we are starting anew. I will be trying, for the first time, an online gradebook this trimester. Soon, I will send home information to you on how you can check your child's grades online. As I will mention in the letter, I keep track of a lot of information, and not all of it will be online for you to view. But I will include all major tests and daily homework for math and reading. On the first reportcard, the one being sent home on Friday, I did not mark the students down for late work. I also, made the lowest grade in each subject area dissappear. For this next trimester, I will not drop the lowest grade, and any work not turned in will be a zero. Also, I will not remind the students as much as I have to turn in missing work. Hopefully, with the grades online, they will have a better understanding of how their grades are looking. If they are late on an assignment, I will mark that grade as a zero, until it is turned in.
This is new to me and it will probably take us some time to work out the details. Communicate with me and let me know how the grade book is working for you. I'll need to know any technical glitches and any other issues that may pop up.
I meant to write a short blog today and did not achieve my goal. Good luck to you all, and may the fifth graders "break a leg".
