Parents,
We had a good week in Room 24 last week. Besides the reading, writing, mathematics, rehearsals and everything else we do in there, the students have been working on individual projects we are calling "Tic - Tac-Toe" menus. These projects give the students the opportunity to study the curriculum more deeply, choose what part of the curriculum they want to study, choose the intensity level, and the product they produce. Slide shows and videos are very popular. We are making great use of my Nano. I am saving all digital work on the students digital portfolios. Pretty nifty.
This week is short, only three days. The spelling list for fourth grade (The B will not be tested until next Friday, November the 19th. Fourth grade will have a math chapter test on chapter 6 this Wednesday. For writing the Fourth graders will be completing a practice "Response to Literature". This will be the first writing grade for the new reporting period.
Fifth graders are continuing to work on Chapter 5 of the math book and will rehearse on Monday and Wednesday this week. They will begin the new Wordly Wise - Lesson 7 - to be tested next Friday, the 19th. I have stepped up the grammar program for the fifth graders, we are continuing to work with prepositional phrases.
Fifth graders have just finished a until on American Government and will begin Science again this week with Chapter 6 "The Solar System". I would like to remind parents of the on-line resources for the science chapters. They are a great way to review, or preview, the material.
The students have earned an ice-cream and movie party on Wednesday, for turning in so many box tops! Wednesday afternoon should be fun.
Grading for Report Cards The report cards will be sent home soon, November 19th. If your child was to receive a below level grade, you would have already been contacted. The students are doing well. I was generous with late assignments and worked hard to make sure that all students missing any work got that turned in. During the next reporting period, they will receive less support from me in the area of late or missing work.
But for this report card, here are the basic methods of tabulating the grades. For math, in both fourth and fifth grades the test scores were used to tabulate the grade. Homework assignments for both are used for the effort grade. If your child receives an "S" in effort, he/she probably missed some assignments.
Writing is based on work done on My Access and assignments in class.
For the first trimester, reading grades for fourth graders are based entirely on reading assignments given in class and the reading journals. AR is used for an effort grade. This next trimester, their AR goal will be part (15%) of their reading grade.
The fifth grade reading is based upon, Wordly Wise, reading assignments (including journals), and AR. Each is 1/3 their grade.
Social Studies and Science for both groups is based upon tests and assignments given in class.
I am always happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to email or call.
Finally - I could use a few things for the room. It would be useful to have some spiral notebooks. Some more paper for copies, and folders.
Thank you, and have a great week.
